Description: Silver body with distinct black bars and distinct silver/whitespots.

Broodstock notes: Female is more aggressive than male

Physical differences: Female has a “perfect” spoon shape. Male has “spoon” shape with a squared jaw and flat belly

Adult diet: Varied frozen and live food. Fed once per day

Pre-spawning activity: Female chases male in tank- shimmies and shakes

Time spawning began: varies

Area spawning occurred: varies

Frequency of spawning: 28 -32 days

Egg description: mouth brooder, not observed

Approximate quantity: 22 – 42 depending on nutrition

Size: 3 mm

Egg changes / development: red mass in males mouth. Eyes visible around day 15.

Incubation period: 21 – 26 days

Time hatching occurred: 1 hours before lights out or during night

Size of hatching larvae: 7 mm

Yolk sac present? none or slight

Newly hatched appearance: Similar to adults with reduced first dorsal fin. Black and transparent instead of black and white

Lighting & photo period: 2 175 MH 10000K 13 hours. Bulbs changed annually.

Filtration:Live rock, Canister filter, power filter, skimmer. flow rate unknown.

Additives and dosages: occassional kalkwasser. Instan Ocean® 10% monthly. RO water (make-up for evaporation loss)

Specific gravity: 1.024 (hydrometer)

Water temperature (F): 77 – 84\F0F

pH: 8.0 ((test kit)

Nitrate: <10 ppm (test kit)

Calcium: not measured


First food offered: Artemia nauplii accepted immediately, 1 -3 times per day.

Second food offered: Copepods/amphipods at day 7. 1-3 times per day.

Comments: Male only has 3 – 6 days before spawning takes place unless female is removed/separated. This pair has had 6 broods in the past 8 months. However, I only recently started rearing the the past 2 broods (40 total surviving young). Many have been lost in transfer and/or predation.
